Supreme Court Justice B.V. Nagaratna has openly expressed his disagreement with the demonetization policy implemented in 2016. He called this policy unconstitutional and highlighted its harsh impact on the general public. He said in a statement that he considered the problems that decision would cause to daily wage workers. They were forced to exchange notes even before purchasing essential goods. The issue of sudden invalidation of 86 per cent of currency and especially Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes has been the subject of serious debate and scrutiny. Addressing the 'Judiciary and Constitution' conference organized at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, Justice Nagarathna said, 'Imagine a labourer. Those who had to exchange notes before purchasing items of daily need. The sudden implementation of this decision made me realize that this was a good way to convert black money into white.

Governor should perform his duties as per the Constitution: Justice Nagarathna. Justice Nagarathna also commented on the activity of state governments challenging the actions of governors in court. He stressed that it is a shame that governors have to give orders to do or not do things in some way. He said governors should act in accordance with the Constitution to reduce the trend of court cases. Putting the deficiencies in the actions of the Governor of a State before the Constitutional Courts is not a healthy practice under the Constitution.
