Just two sheep left from France, a huge family of 700 sheep settled near Antarctica

In the sub-region of Antarctica, which is considered the world’s coldest, most desolate and almost impossible for humans, such an amazing and surprising miracle of nature has been seen, which has put even scientists and environmentalists into thinking. About 46 years ago, just two ordinary sheep (one male and one female) brought from France were left on a sub-Antarctic island in the southern Indian Ocean with extremely cold and harsh weather, and no one thought that they would be able to survive in that severe cold. But with time, under the will to live and the laws of nature, those two sheep not only adapted themselves to that harsh climate, but also took their breed forward and today have established a complete and strong family of more than 700 sheep there. When the pictures and scientific studies of this incredible incident came before the world, everyone was surprised at how life finds its way even in adverse circumstances.

This whole story is mainly related to the Kerguelen Islands, which are often counted as ‘defenseless islands’ or the most deserted areas of the world, which comes administratively under France. Decades ago, when scientific expeditions and sailors visited there, some animals were released on the island for food or as part of other biological experiments, including these two sheep brought from France. When those two sheep were left to fend for themselves, it was believed that they would die within a few weeks or months due to the strong icy winds, constant cold and severe lack of food. But on the contrary, those sheep learned to fight the local grass, harsh weather and geographical barriers. Not only did they keep themselves alive, but with time their numbers started increasing rapidly, which has become a major topic of biology today.

The weather in Antarctica and its surrounding islands is considered among the most dangerous in the world, where temperatures always remain below zero, snow storms blow and even sightings of the sun are rare for months. For any mammalian organism to survive and reproduce in such a difficult environment is considered no less than a miracle. Recent research done by scientists has revealed that those two sheep adapted themselves to the environment there under the principle of natural selection over generations. The wool growing on their bodies protected them from the severe cold and the special types of natural vegetation growing on the island fulfilled their nutritional needs. Living in a completely wild environment, without any human care, doctor or shed, the way these sheep saved their offspring and brought it to the figure of 700, is a living and excellent example of evolution.

The settlement of this large family of wild sheep has attracted the attention of biologists, ecologists and climate researchers from all over the world towards this unique island. Scientists are now studying in depth how domesticated animals became completely feral animals in just a few decades and defeated the harshest laws of nature. This research is also helping to understand how conditions like climate change and extreme cold affect animals’ DNA and their ability to survive. Apart from this, it is also a proof that if human interference is completely removed, then nature creates its own balance and life sets its new limits in every situation.

Ever since the story of these two sheep abandoned in France and their 700-member family came to light on social media and international media platforms, it has become the biggest topic of discussion on the internet. People are amazed at how this caravan of life kept moving forward silently in a cold and barren place, far away from human settlements. This incident is not only exciting, but it also teaches us how strong the will is in life. This family of sheep, growing up in this cold zone of Antarctica, has forever been recorded in the most interesting chapters of wildlife history in the times to come, proving that there is no end to the mysteries of nature.
