The debate regarding the practice of veil and purdah has been going on for years in our society. Some consider it a part of culture while others consider it a violation of women’s personal freedom. Meanwhile, a surprising case has come to light from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, which has given a completely new and modern twist to this old debate. A domestic dispute that started over the veil has now crossed the threshold of the family counseling center and directly reached the corridors of the court, and the situation has reached the point of divorce just a few days after the marriage.
Controversy started just two days after marriage
According to the information received, an educated girl from Bhojpur area of Ghaziabad was married to a young man from Alwar, Rajasthan about a year ago. When the bride reached her in-laws’ home after the wedding, she was expected to wear a veil. This tradition is followed quite strictly even today in many parts of Rajasthan.
The married woman alleges that as soon as she reached her in-laws’ house, mental pressure was put on her to follow traditional customs and remain continuously veiled. The woman strongly opposed this and clearly said that wearing the veil or not is a matter of her personal freedom and it cannot be forcibly imposed on anyone. Due to this issue, the dispute between husband-wife and in-laws increased.
“You wear the veil, I will wear the sherwani.”
When the in-laws remained adamant, instead of resolving the dispute, the daughter-in-law put forward an argument and condition which surprised everyone.
Unique condition of the woman:
“If my in-laws have a traditional expectation of me to wear a veil all the time, then as a matter of equality, my husband will also have to wear only a heavy sherwani 24 hours a day inside and outside the house. If he can do this, then I will also accept the rule of veil.”
After this strange and harsh condition of the wife, instead of improving the situation, things got completely worse. Relatives tried several times to negotiate between the two sides, but there was no result.
Counseling also failed, ideological differences are increasing among couples
It was sent to the Family Counseling Center in Ghaziabad to resolve the matter. The counselors there made the husband, wife and their families sit together and did several rounds of counselling. The stance of both the parties was as follows:
According to the counselors, even after a lot of persuasion, neither of the parties was ready to budge from their stand. Ultimately, seeing that no settlement was reached, the counseling center closed the case file. Now both the parties have officially filed the divorce petition in the court.
Lifestyle is becoming a big hindrance in modern marriages
Experts of Family Counseling Center say that these days, not only serious issues but also disputes regarding ideological differences, living style, eating habits and modern lifestyle are increasing rapidly among newly married couples.
Ghaziabad alone has seen many such cases where the roots of the dispute were very small:
-
Restrictions on clothing: In one case, a newlywed filed a complaint because she was prevented from wearing western clothes after marriage and was forced to wear saree all the time.
-
Social media and reels ka chaska: In another case, the husband filed for separation from his wife alleging that his wife remains busy on mobile all day long and keeps making reels only for social media, leaving aside household chores.
Experts believe that today’s generation does not seem to be in the mood for mutual coordination and ‘compromise’ in relationships, due to which the issue of personal freedom is reaching the courts very quickly.
