Just tradition or deep science? Know the secret of making the wife sit on the left side of the husband during worship and auspicious activities.

In Hindu religion and Vedic culture, woman has been called ‘Vamangi’ i.e. the left part of man. From the seven vows of marriage to the daily puja, hawan and auspicious ceremonies, there is a clear rule that the wife sits on the left side of her husband. This system is not just a formal tradition, but behind it is a deep spiritual philosophy, energy balance and a well-organized code of Sanatan Dharma. According to the scriptures, any man’s yagya, chanting or ritual without a co-wife is not considered fully fruitful.

Energy balance of Shiva-Shakti and Ardhanarishwar form From a spiritual and yogic point of view, the human body and the entire creation is governed by the balance of Shiva and Shakti. In the ‘Ardhanarishwar’ form of Lord Shiva, the right part is considered to be the symbol of male element (Shiva) and the left part is considered to be the symbol of nature and power (Goddess Parvati).

Classical rules: when to sit on the left and when on the right? According to Vedic texts and Dharmasindhu, there are clear rules regarding the direction in which the wife should sit in different types of rites and rituals:

1. Situations of sitting on the left side:

   
   

   • Daily prayers and chanting: In daily god worship and religious rituals.

   • Havan and Yagya: At the time of any Vedic yagya or offering.

   • Kanyadaan and marriage: While taking the pledge of Kanyadaan in his daughter’s marriage.

   • While blessing: When the couple together blesses the little one.

   • Bedtime: While resting at night, the wife’s place is fixed on the left side.

2. Occasions for sitting on the right side (south side):

   
   

   • Wedding Rounds: During the seven rounds, the bride walks behind the groom and on the right side in the first four rounds, while in the last rounds she walks on the left side.

   • While accepting Charanamrit and Tilak: While taking religious offerings or consecration water.

   • Brahmin food and charity: While washing the feet of scholars and saints and while giving dakshina.

   • Sindoordan: During the marriage ceremony, it is considered auspicious for the wife to sit on the right side while applying vermilion.

Astrology of left side of woman and right side of man There is clear mention of the importance of body parts in Samudrik Shastra and Vedic astrology also. The right side of men (e.g. right eye, right hand) is considered auspicious and active, while the left side of women is the center of auspicious signs and positive energy. Therefore when a couple sits together and worships God, the most auspicious and energetic aspects of both complement each other to create a balanced and harmonious environment.
