There is a very sacred festival dedicated to this cow service and worship. Gopashtamiwhich is celebrated every year on the Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.

In the year 2025, this holy festival will be celebrated on Thursday, 30 October. According to the astrological calendar, Ashtami Tithi will start at 9:23 am on October 29 and end at 10:06 am on October 30. According to the rules of Udayatithi, it will be auspicious to celebrate this festival on 30th October only.

What is the story of Gopashtami? Why did Kanha become ‘Gopal’?

Gopashtami is directly related to the childhood pastimes of Lord Shri Krishna. According to mythology, it was on this auspicious day that Lord Krishna started the act of grazing cows for the first time. Earlier they used to take only calves for grazing. When child Krishna insisted his mother Yashoda to take the cows to graze, the mother asked Nand Baba to take permission. When Nand Baba got the auspicious time from Pandit ji, it was the day of Gopashtami. From this day Lord Shri Krishna was called ‘Gopal’ or ‘Govinda’ and this day became dedicated to the worship of cows.

Small measures taken on this day will give big results

The day of Gopashtami is considered so sacred that even small tasks done with full devotion on this day can bring a huge and positive change in your life.

  1. Worship of Mother Cow: On this day, wake up early in the morning and take bath. If possible, bathe the cow and its calf also. After this, apply turmeric-kumkum tilak to them, garland them with flowers and perform aarti with incense sticks.
