Kolkata, August 21 (HS). A delegation of junior doctors held a meeting at Swasthya Bhavan from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm today to demand cancellation of transfer of former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh and three other demands. After the meeting, the doctors termed it disappointing and said that the health department has not given any concrete assurance in accepting their demands.
The doctors said in clear words, “We came here for our demands, but we were just told verbally that they will consider it. We are disappointed and our agitation will continue.”
The agitating doctors had demanded the immediate withdrawal of the transfer of Sandeep Ghosh. Sandeep Ghosh was transferred from R.G. Kar to National Medical College. However, he is now on leave after the court's intervention. Apart from this, the doctors also demanded the removal of the hospital officials responsible at the time of the rape and murder of a female doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College. The incident of vandalism that took place at R.G. Kar on August 14 was also raised in the meeting, for which the current principal Suhritha Pal is being held responsible. The doctors have also demanded her dismissal, as she has not been coming to the hospital since the vandalism and cannot be contacted.
Earlier, a 35-member delegation of doctors went to meet Health Education Director Kaustubh Nayak at Swasthya Bhawan. When the delegation went inside, the rest of the doctors sat on a dharna outside Swasthya Bhawan. The doctors also made it clear that they will raise their demands in a peaceful manner. Today, the march started from CGO Complex, in which junior and senior doctors participated together.
During the march towards Swasthya Bhawan, the doctors kept moving forward holding each other's hands. During the march, the police were also talked to several times, but they were not stopped. During the march, the doctors raised their demands by holding posters and banners like 'Nyay chahiye'. The police had tightened security around Sijio Complex and Swasthya Bhawan.
Now it remains to be seen what form this movement of doctors takes and what stance the government takes on their demands.
