Dehradun, 14 November (HS). In a national workshop organized on Thursday to deal with water crisis in hilly areas, experts brainstormed on the current challenges of water management and described jowar, millet and madua as the best alternatives to water crisis.

In the national workshop on water management strategies held at Graphic Era Deemed University, Vice Chancellor Dr. Narpinder Singh said that along with agriculture, the demand for water is increasing in various sectors. For this, it is necessary that traditional systems of water conservation be linked with today’s new technologies such as satellite data, real time monitoring, desalinization and smart irrigation. He called upon the students to keep rivers, lakes and other water sources clean. He said that three to five thousand liters of water is used to produce one kilogram of sugarcane and rice.

In the workshop, Dr. from GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. Deepak Kumar stressed on the need to test water quality on a large scale. Arsenic, fluoride, nitrate and iron are commonly found contaminants in water. These substances cause serious problems like cancer, typhoid, cholera. He gave information about air sparging, phyto remediation, bio remediation and permeable reactive barrier techniques to clean water.

Dr., scientist of National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, participated in the conference. Shakti Suyavanshi threw light on ancient water conservation systems like Chultun of Mayan Civilization, Lothal of Indus Valley, Stepwell of Rajasthan, Jackwell of Andaman Nicobar and Ramtek of Maharashtra. Dr. Kritika Kothari of IIT Roorkee said that to deal with the challenge of crop production in the mountains, along with efficient irrigation systems, technologies like remote sensing, crop-based data monitoring, UAV monitoring can be used. He shared information about the research done on various crops.
