Multan, 9 October (HIST). England's star batsman Joe Root achieved a remarkable feat on Wednesday, becoming the leading run-scorer for the Three Lions in Test cricket.
Root achieved this feat on the third day of the first Test match against Pakistan in Multan. As soon as Root touched the mark of 71 runs at the Multan Cricket Ground, he left behind the record of former captain Alastair Cook. Root has so far scored 12513 runs in the longer format for England, till the time of writing, Root is unbeaten on 111 runs.
Cook had scored 12472 runs for the Three Lions in Test cricket. Root achieved this record by taking just one single against Pakistan's Abrar Ahmed in the 43rd over. Immediately after the British cricketer achieved the record, the England dressing room stood up and started applauding to honor the 33-year-old's achievement. Root made his Test cricket debut in 2012 against India. Since then, he has scored 12513 runs in 146 Test matches and 267 innings at a strike rate of 56.93 and an average of 50.62. In the longer format, Root has scored 35 centuries and 5 double centuries.
Great batsman Sachin Tendulkar is the highest run scorer in Test cricket with 15921 runs. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is in second place with 13378 runs.
Till the time of writing the news on the third day, England has scored 337 runs for 3 wickets, in which Harry Brook is at the crease with 58 runs and Joe Root with 111 runs.
In the first Test match in Multan, Pakistan scored 556 runs in its first innings. Abdullah Shafiq (102), Shan Masood (151) and Agha Salman (104*) had scored centuries.
