Ranchi, July 10 (HS). Jharkhand High Court has expressed strong displeasure with the state government over the delay in the proposed Kanhar Barrage project for irrigation in Palamu and Garhwa. The court summoned the Chief Secretary, Water Resources Secretary, Forest Secretary and Finance Secretary in the first shift on Wednesday. After this, all these officers appeared in person in the court in the second shift.
The court verbally told him that in the year 2020, the state government had given a timeline of completion of this project in five years but the work has not progressed. The court has asked the Chief Secretary to present a time frame for the completion of the Kanhar Barrage project and to file an affidavit directing to provide drinking water to the people of Garhwa, Palamu till the Kanhar Barrage is not completed. The next hearing of the case will be next week. The court took seriously the government's demand for eight years to complete the Kanhar Barrage.
The court did not accept this affidavit of the government. The court verbally said that the hearing on the public interest litigation filed regarding the Kanhar project since 2009 is going on till 2024 but the state government remains indifferent towards the Kanhar Barrage project. The situation of drought has been seen in Palamu, Garhwa area of Jharkhand for years but the state government has not taken any positive step so far to ensure the arrangement of water for irrigation there.
Earlier, the state government filed an affidavit and sought eight years to complete the Kanhar Barrage project, on which the court verbally said that affidavits are being filed repeatedly by the state government but till now no conclusion has been reached regarding the Kanhar Barrage project. The High Court is serious about completing the Kanhar Barrage project. In the year 2020, the government had claimed to complete this project in five years but this claim was not fulfilled, which indicates how the state government is working.
