Jemimah Rodrigues, Pooja Vastrakar included in Indian team, selection depends on fitness

New Delhi, May 31 (HS). The Women's Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday night announced the Indian team for the upcoming multi-format home series against South Africa.

Batsman Jemimah Rodrigues and allrounder Pooja Vastrakar have been included in the Test and limited-overs squads but their selection is dependent on fitness.

Rodrigues missed the five-match T20 series in Bangladesh in April-May due to a back injury and was undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. However, Vastrakar played all five matches in Bangladesh and the BCCI media statement did not reveal the nature of her injury.

Uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chhetri has also been included in all three squads. She replaced Yastika Bhatia who was injured after playing just one T20 match in Bangladesh. Chhetri was also part of India's Asian Games team that won gold by defeating Sri Lanka in Hangzhou in 2023.

Top-order batsman Priya Punia, who last played for India in July 2023, has been included in the Test squad. Medium pacer Arundhati Reddy, who has played 26 T20 matches so far, has also been included in the Test and ODI squads. However, fast bowler Titas Sadhu, who was part of the T20 matches against Bangladesh as well as India's last ODI and Test assignment (against Australia last year), has not been included in the squad.

South Africa women's team's tour of India will begin with a three-match ODI series, then end with one Test and three T20 matches. The ODIs as well as the visiting team's one-day practice match against the Board President's XI team will be played in Bengaluru, while the rest of the matches will be held in Chennai.

The one-off Test was not originally part of the ICC's Future Test Programme (FTP). It was added because both the BCCI and Cricket South Africa have been trying to promote women's Tests recently. This will be India's third Test in seven months, having previously played against England and Australia at home in December last year.
