New Delhi, June 17 (HS). Defender Jarmanpreet Singh, who has played 106 matches for the Indian hockey team, made his debut at the 2018 Men's Hockey Champions Trophy in Breda, where India finished second. Since then, he has earned many laurels for the country, including winning gold at the 2018 Men's Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat, Oman and a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Jarmanpreet also won a gold medal with the Indian hockey team at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
The 27-year-old recently returned from a stellar season at the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 in Antwerp and London, where he had the honour of playing his 100th international match in the match between India and Belgium on May 24. He was also named Player of the Match when India beat Germany 3-0 on June 1, thanks to his constant threat on the right flank and a brilliant assist that set up Gurjant Singh's goal, as well as his tireless defensive duties.
Speaking on his recent performances, Jarmanpreet Singh was quoted by Hockey India as saying, “The FAH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 matches in Antwerp and London were a great experience. We got a chance to test ourselves against different teams that use different formations. These matches helped us identify areas of improvement in our game, as well as confirm our strengths. Winning the Player of the Match against Germany was a great feeling. Performing well in preparation for a big tournament is important as it boosts confidence and I am happy to be recognised for my performance. But as a player, improvement never stops and my aim is to improve further in the upcoming camp to get closer to my best performance for the Paris 2024 Olympics.”
Jarmanpreet has been playing consistently under the guidance of head coach Craig Fulton, starting in the Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023, Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, Test matches against South Africa and Australia and all the FI Hockey Pro League 2023/24 matches. He, however, came on the field in the second half in the match against Germany on June 8.
He said, “The chemistry in the team is great. We have regular player meetings off the field, where we discuss previous matches and ways to help each other on the field. The whole team is moving in the same direction and I feel we are in a good rhythm. Like all the other players, I always try to give my best on the field and hope to make it to the team for the Olympics. It will be a matter of great pride for me and my family if I play in my first Olympic Games at the Paris 2024 Olympics, it will be like a dream come true. Even if I am selected, my goal will be to give my hundred percent for the team, because the team always comes first.”
