The Indian Army in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) has launched an initiative to train Village Defence Guards (VDGs) to enhance the security of local communities. The initiative aims to teach these civilians the skills required to protect their villages, thereby strengthening the security infrastructure of the entire region.
Currently, about 600 people are undergoing training in automatic rifle, squad post drill and small tactics. The training is being given at the unit level near their villages, so that the VDGs can immediately apply their skills in real situations. Each VDG unit is being given at least three days of intensive training.
The training is being led by various units of the Indian Army, while the training and training equipment is also being taken from the Corps Battle School, Sarol. This ensures that the VDGs are receiving training from experienced and skilled personnel, thereby enhancing their skills. Under this training program, Village Defence Guards (VDGs) are imparted special knowledge of automatic weapons as well as tactical operations. It aims to ensure security at the local level by countering terrorist threats.
The initiative has been launched at the request of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and has seen good progress. So far, around 500 people have been trained in the Rajouri region, while an additional 85-90 people have been trained in the Doda and Kishtwar regions.
Along with this, Self Loading Rifles (SLRs) are also being provided to the VDG in coordination with Army Ordnance Depot and JKP. These rifles are important weapons for the VDG, which makes them more powerful. This initiative is an important initiative towards ensuring the safety of the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.
