Jailed MP in terror funding case granted interim bail to campaign in Kashmir polls | News India

Rashid Engineer gets interim bail for election campaign: A Delhi court has granted interim bail to MP Engineer Rashid in the terror funding case. Patiala House Court has granted interim bail till 2 October 2024. He has got interim bail for campaigning for the assembly elections to be held in Jammu and Kashmir. He had sought interim bail for 3 months. At present, the order on the regular bail application is pending.

Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, defeated former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah from Baramulla in the Lok Sabha elections while in jail. He won the election as an independent candidate and became an MP. His Awami Ittehad Party is going to contest the next Jammu and Kashmir elections.

Engineer Rashid's son Abrar Rashid campaigned for his father. He is leading the election campaign of AIP.

Rashid has been in jail since 2019

Earlier on July 5, the court had granted custody parole to Rashid to take oath after winning the Lok Sabha elections. Rashid has been in jail since 2019, he was arrested by the NIA in 2017 in a terror-funding case. Rashid is lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail. His name came up during the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali. In which the NIA arrested him for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists in the valley.

The NIA had issued warrants against several people, including Kashmir separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin. In 2022, the trial court sentenced Malik to life imprisonment after he accepted the charges.
