Jagannath Temple Controversy: ‘God broke the pride and uprooted the Mamata government’, Puri’s Daitapati’s sensational statement on the Digha temple controversy Jagannath Temple Controversy: ‘God broke the pride and uprooted the Mamata government’, Puri’s Daitapati’s sensational statement on the Digha temple controversy

Chief Panigrahi and senior Daitapati of the holy Puri Jagannath temple of Odisha has given a very shocking and big statement regarding former Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee and her then government. In a special conversation with a leading television channel amid the holy festival of the sacred Rath Yatra, Daitapati has directly linked the change of power in Bengal to the wrath and justice of Lord Jagannath Swamy. He said in clear words that the then Mamata Banerjee government was so proud of its power and decisions that it had completely rejected the scriptures of Sanatan Dharma and the legitimate advice of religious leaders. Daitapati claimed that Mahaprabhu never tolerates anyone’s arrogance and that is why his government was overthrown from Bengal.

Calling ‘Digha’ as ‘Dham’ and installing a stone idol was against the scriptures.

The main root of this controversy is related to the Jagannath temple built in the coastal tourist destination ‘Digha’ of West Bengal. Citing religious rules, Daitapati said that we have nothing to do with any political party, but it is unrighteous to change what is written in the scriptures. He said that despite our objections, Mamata Banerjee forcibly added the word ‘Dham’ to the newly constructed temple in Digha, which was completely wrong. Only Puri can be called the real ‘Jagannath Dham’ in the entire universe. There may be thousands of temples of Lord Jagannath in the country and the world, but they do not come under the category of ‘Dham’. Moreover, the biggest religious mistake was committed by installing the stone idol of Lord Jagannath in the Digha temple, whereas as per the scriptures the idol of Mahaprabhu is mandated to be made only of sacred Neem wood (Darubrahma).

Praise for Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari: ‘Shishya rectified his old mistake as soon as he assumed power’

Daitapati has openly praised the current Chief Minister of West Bengal, Subhendu Adhikari. He said that Shubhendu Adhikari is our disciple and as soon as he assumed power, he took a historic and scriptural decision, which was very important. Shubhendu government has respected the Sanatan tradition by removing the word ‘Dham’ from the name of Digha temple. He did what was right according to religion. Daitapati reminded that when this temple was established in Digha in May 2025, top religious leaders from across the country and the chief priests of Puri had strongly criticized this insistence of the then government.

Chief priests of Puri had already warned: Politics in the name of God bore fruit

Since the consecration of the Digha temple, Puri’s chief priest Rajesh Daitapati and Daitapati Bhavani Das had opened a front against the then Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Bhavani Das had then clearly said that building a temple is a very virtuous act, but it should not violate the decorum of religion and scriptures. There are only four Sanatan Dhams in India and no political power can declare the fifth Dham on its own. He had warned that similar kind of tampering with religious rules had been seen in Orissa in the past and the same was done in Bengal. According to the priests, the result of making God and faith a means of vote bank politics is in front of everyone today.
