After meeting Ukrainian President Zelensky, Italian PM Meloni has said that I believe India can play a role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He said that if you believe that the conflict can be resolved by leaving Ukraine, then you are wrong. Italy has been a strong supporter of Ukraine. We will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine for its defense on the condition that these weapons will be used only for self-defense on Ukrainian soil and not to attack Russian soil. Both sides need to understand and end this conflict and I think China and India can play their role in this.
Italian Prime Minister Maloni's appointment of China and India as mediators supports Putin's statement that China, India and Brazil can help resolve the conflict as mediators. However, Putin reneged on the Istanbul agreement signed at the start of the war and said any agreement would be based on what Ukraine had agreed to when the war began in Istanbul, but reneged a day later.
Both parties trust India
India has so far been successful in maintaining its neutrality in this conflict. Under pressure from Western countries, India neither imposed sanctions on Russia nor stopped buying oil from it. On the other hand, India continued to strengthen its relations with the West without coming under pressure from Russia. India has abstained from voting on almost all the resolutions brought against Russia in the United Nations Security Council and India has never openly criticized Russia's attack on Ukraine. India has always said that this issue should be resolved through dialogue and not war. In the last four months, PM Modi has met Zelensky twice and President Putin once. Of the three countries mentioned by Putin, India is the only country that the West can also trust. PM Modi himself has visited both the countries and has good relations with both the leaders.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for the last two and a half years. Ukraine, which was earlier constantly fighting a defensive war, has now become aggressive and is infiltrating inside Russian borders. Weapons of violence are being used continuously in this war. While the entire NATO is standing in support of Ukraine, Russia is facing it alone. At the beginning of the war, Russia hoped that the stronghold of Kiev would fall in a few days, but today, even after two years, the Russian army has not been able to reach Kiev. Recently, the US and other NATO member countries have also provided their weapons and financial assistance to help Ukraine.
