Burkina Faso: In August, an attack by al Qaeda affiliates in the West African city of Barsalogho, Burkina Faso, killed nearly 600 people within a matter of hours. Most of the dead include children and women. On 24 August, residents of Barsalogho were shot dead while digging trenches. It was one of the worst attacks in Western history. In fact, Al Qaeda had warned against supporting the army against terrorism.
600 people died in one stroke
Members of Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam-wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), affiliated with al Qaeda in Mali and active in Burkina Faso, shot villagers as they entered the outskirts of Barsalogho on bikes. The UN estimated the death toll to be around 200, but JNIM claimed to have killed 300 terrorists. The French government confirmed the death toll at 600 on Friday, citing a security assessment.
people should be told
A person has spoken to the media about the attack. He said, I was among those who were asked by the army to dig trenches. I was 4 km away from the city when I heard the first gunshot at 11 am. I started crawling into the ditch to save my life. It seemed that the attackers were following me into the trenches, so I came out of the trenches and approached the slain victim. At that time there was blood everywhere. There were sounds of screaming and shouting coming from everywhere. I slept on my stomach in the bushes. I remained hidden there till afternoon.
The victim, who lost two of his limbs in the attack, said that JNIM killed them all. We kept collecting dead bodies for three days. People were shouting everywhere. we were scared. There were so many dead bodies on the ground that it was difficult to bury them.
The army had ordered a large ditch to be dug around the city to protect the local people from the jihadists. JNIM warned citizens not to support the army against terrorism. Let us tell you that since the 2015 conflict in Burkina Faso, more than 20,000 people have been killed, while about 2 million people have been displaced.
