Currently, the Red Sea and the Strait of Bab al-Mandeb remain the most sensitive areas in the world in terms of global trade and maritime security. This route is tightly guarded by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, known as Israel’s sworn enemies, who are constantly targeting cargo ships. Amidst this tension, a big question arising is whether Iran can completely close this strategically important sea route? According to diplomatic and military experts, Iran cannot block Bab al-Mandeb even if it wants to, no matter how big a force the Houthi fighters become there.
Why is it impossible for Iran to shut it down?
There are several very strong reasons for not being able to completely close Bab el-Mandeb. The biggest thing is that this international waterway is the lifeline of the world, through which a large part of global trade passes. If Iran or its supported groups dare to block it completely, it would be a declaration of war not just against Israel or America, but against the entire world. Apart from this, several international task forces along with the US Navy are patrolling the area round the clock. Any kind of complete blockade would mean directly inviting disastrous military action for Iran, which would completely destroy what little trade Iran has itself.
The ship coming to India is also stuck in this maze
India too has not remained untouched by the heat of this entire maritime dispute. Some time ago, a very scary incident came to light, when a commercial cargo ship coming towards India was saved from being a victim of drone and missile attack by Houthi rebels around this area and was stuck there for a long time. After this incident, the Indian Navy had to increase the deployment of its warships in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. This route is very important for India because our crude oil and trade with European countries passes through this route.
Global trade crisis amidst the guard of enemies
At present the situation is that the Houthi rebels sitting on the coast of Yemen are selectively targeting those ships which belong to Israel, America or Britain. Because of their fear, many big shipping companies have decided to abandon this short route and go around Africa completely (via the Cape of Good Hope). Due to this, not only is there a delay of weeks in the delivery of goods, but the freight fares have also started skyrocketing. This siege by Israel’s enemies has created a new crisis for the global economy, but Iran knows very well that completely blocking this route would be like hitting an ax in its own feet.
