Gaza: At least 30 people, including children, have been killed and more than 100 Palestinians injured in an Israeli airstrike on a school used by displaced Palestinians in central Gaza as Israeli negotiators prepare to hold talks with international mediators on a proposed ceasefire.

Israel said it attacked a Hamas command center at the school. It was used to order attacks on Israeli forces and was heavily armed with high-quality weapons. Hamas dismissed the Israeli military's response as “misguided”.

Civil protection workers in Gaza said the school has sheltered thousands of people and is also being used as a medical site. AP reporters also saw a dead child in an ambulance. A Gaza health ministry spokesman said at least 12 people were killed in another attack. Seven children and seven women were killed in the attack on a girls' school.

Officials from the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Israel are due to meet in Italy on Sunday for ceasefire talks. CIA Director Bill Burns is scheduled to meet Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al Thani, Mossad Director David Barnea and Egyptian spy chief Abbas Kamel, U.S. and Egyptian officials said on condition of anonymity.

US officials said on Friday that Israel and Hamas had agreed on the basic outline of a three-phase deal. But Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in his speech to the US Congress that Israel would end the war only by destroying Hamas.
