The new agreement between America and Iran for the restoration of peace in West Asia has deeply worried Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While the world is hoping that tensions will reduce after the recent 14-point agreement (MoU), Israel feels that this agreement can give new strength to Iran and its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon. Due to this apprehension, Netanyahu has made it clear that the Israeli army will not withdraw from Southern Lebanon as long as it feels its presence there is necessary for the safety of its citizens.
What is the root of the dispute?
This conflict, which started with the joint US-Israeli attacks in February 2026, is now at a new diplomatic turn. The latest Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between America and Iran calls for a permanent end to the war and ensuring the territorial integrity of Lebanon. However, Israel sees it as a threat. The Israeli government suspects that under the guise of this agreement, Washington is unknowingly strengthening Iran’s influence in Lebanon, which could be fatal for Israel’s security in the future.
The fear of these three big threats is troubling Israel
Israeli strategists and government sources believe that the agreement could limit Israel’s military capability:
-
Restraint on military action: Till now Israel was free to attack Hezbollah positions whenever it wanted. They fear that now Washington will object to every attack and Israel’s ‘operational freedom’ will end.
-
Pressure for withdrawal of troops: There are reports that the Trump administration may put pressure on Israel to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, which Netanyahu is not ready to accept.
-
Sanjeevani to Hezbollah: Israel believes that this agreement is weakening the ongoing joint efforts against Hezbollah, which may give the terrorist organization an opportunity to regroup.
Bibi’s growing restlessness
According to sources, Netanyahu—affectionately known as ‘Bibi’ in Israel—is extremely upset about the deal. Israel argues that the ‘Lebanon part’ of this interim agreement is more dangerous than Iran’s nuclear program. The Israeli government believes that this closeness between America and Iran is not only disturbing the security balance, but has also put Israel’s future security strategy at stake. Now it remains to be seen whether the Trump administration will be able to dispel these doubts of Israel or whether Netanyahu will remain firm on his security policies.
