Israel's military claimed on Wednesday that it had taken control of a strategic corridor running along Gaza's border with Egypt. The corridor, known as Philadelphia, stretches along the border with neighbouring Egypt near the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where clashes with Israeli forces have recently occurred. Smuggling tunnels running between Egypt and the Gaza Strip stretch beneath the region.
78 people died in a single day
Meanwhile, Israeli forces shelled a camp in a designated safe zone west of Rafah, killing at least 21 people, including 13 women and girls, in the latest mass killing of Palestinian civilians. According to media reports, the attack in Gaza has taken the death toll to 78 in a single day. Earlier on May 28, at least 37 people were killed in Israeli shelling and air strikes outside the southern Gaza city of Rafah, most of whom were sheltering in tents.
The international community is angry with Israel's attack
The fire at the tent camp has sparked widespread international outrage, including from some of Israel's closest allies, over the army's escalating offensive in Rafah. So Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva transferred Brazil's ambassador to Israel to another post after months of diplomatic tensions over the country's military operation in the Gaza Strip. Lula's government said in an official order that it appointed Ambassador Frederic Meyer, who was recalled to Brazil in February, as Israel's ambassador. The move is a sign of a souring of relations between the two countries.
Brazil took this step
Brazil has left no ambassador in Tel Aviv amid a row over Lula's remarks in which he compared Israeli military operations to the murder of the Jewish population during the Holocaust. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government declared Lula persona non grata in the country and demanded a pardon from both the president and the mayor. Lula has not yet said anything about Colombia's South American leftist Gustavo Petro, who earlier this month cut diplomatic ties with Israel after accusing it of “genocide.”
