ISL: Punjab and Goa will enter to make the path to playoffs easier

New Delhi, March 11 (HS). Punjab FC will host FC Goa in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here this evening.

The newest team in the league will be keen to continue their excellent form, which has included four wins in the last six matches. Greek head coach Stychos Vargatis' team has 20 points from 18 games, one point behind sixth-placed Jamshedpur FC (21) and have played one match less than the Red Miners (19). A win in the upcoming match will temporarily take them straight into the top six.

On the other hand, Goa (32) are four points behind league leaders Mumbai City FC (36) and have one match more than the Islanders (18). They have won only once in their last five matches, but victory will take them level on 35 points with second-placed Odisha FC, intensifying the race for the top spot.

“The result of the last match was very important for us as we got three points and now our boys will go into the upcoming encounter with confidence and the right balance,” Punjab FC assistant coach Shankarlal Chakraborty said in the pre-match press conference on Sunday.

FC Goa's Spanish head coach Manolo Marquez said on their win against East Bengal FC a few days ago, “I think we played very well in the last match. We didn't miss many chances and set-pieces. “We kept the ball in our possession for a long time.”

Only 1 match has been played between the two teams so far, in which Goa has won.
