Mobile phones decreasing male sperm count: Nowadays, a lot has changed due to the changing lifestyle. We do most of our work through mobile phones. Like paying for ration, checking balance, watching videos or many other important tasks, we are always glued to our mobile.

In many studies, health experts have been warning people to avoid excessive use of mobile phones. This has been seen to cause risks ranging from eye problems to mental health disorders. Are mobile phone malfunctions increasing?

In a study done on excessive use of mobile phones and the way it is kept, scientists said that it is causing serious problems for the reproductive organs. Keeping mobile phones in the pocket of the pants has a bad effect on the reproductive organs of men, which further increases the risk of impotence. This device has been found to be harmful for the reproductive health of both men and women.

Medical reports say that cases of male fertility problems and low sperm count have been on the rise for the past four to five decades. So far, environmental and lifestyle factors have been considered responsible. Some researchers believe that devices emitting low-level radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, such as mobile phones, are also affecting male fertility. Studies also suggest that increased use of mobile phones can also reduce sperm concentration and count. Conditions that persist for a long time can also increase the risk of impotence.

What did the study reveal?

Scientists from the University of Geneva and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute investigated the effects of mobile phone use and holding on men's reproductive health. A 13-year study shows that smartphone use is one of the factors that reduces sperm concentration and total sperm count (TSC) in young adult men. Most men keep their mobile phones in their pants pockets, which has a negative impact on the health of reproductive organs and sperm. It also affects the quality of eggs in women.

According to a report published in the Fertility and Sterility Journal, researchers examined 2,886 men aged 18 to 22 years at military recruitment centers between 2005 and 2018. Semen samples were collected by laboratory experts and sperm concentration, total sperm count (TSC) and their motility were studied. Apart from lifestyle habits, participants were also asked how often they use mobile phones.

The study found that men who used their phones twice a day had significantly higher average sperm concentrations than men who used their phones more than 20 times a day.

Avoid keeping your phone in your pants
The researchers also asked participants where they keep their phone when they are not using it. Most people said they keep it in their pants, shirt or jacket pockets. About 85.7% of the study group (2,368 men) reported that they keep their phone in their pants pocket when not in use.

The study model found no link between keeping the phone in the pants and a decrease in sperm quality, although experts believe that keeping the phone in this way can also have a negative effect on reproductive health. Finally, health experts say that it is almost impossible to stay away from mobile phones these days, although its use can be limited. Avoid the habit of looking at the mobile frequently. Make it a habit to use it only when needed. Avoid keeping the mobile close to the body or near the head while sleeping.
