diabetes: If everything goes well, the day is not far when diabetes will no longer be an incurable disease. You will not have to worry about controlling it. Chinese scientists have done such a miracle. For the first time in the world, a patient's diabetes has been cured through cell therapy.
The achievement was made by a team from Shanghai Changzheng Hospital and the Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Renji Hospital. The research was published in the journal Cell Discovery on April 30.
Diabetes cured for the first time
The patient is a 59-year-old man who was suffering from type-2 diabetes for the last 25 years. He also underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. Most of his pancreatic islets were not functioning. The pancreas controls blood sugar levels. Due to which he had to take multiple injections of insulin every day.
treated like this
The patient underwent an innovative cell transplant in July 2021. After 11 weeks, he no longer required exogenous insulin. Medication to control blood sugar levels was also gradually reduced and completely discontinued after a year. He was followed up after transplant, which showed that his pancreatic islet function was working well. After about 33 months, the patient was relieved of insulin.
in the long-running research
Insulin is needed to control blood sugar levels, which is produced by the pancreas. When a person is affected by diabetes, this system fails to function. This leads to insulin not being produced or used properly.
Scientists around the world are exploring islet transplantation, an option to create islet-like cells from human stem cells. Now Chinese scientists have achieved great success in this. If everything goes well, the day is not far when diabetes can be cured.
