Dubai, May 24 (HS). Iran's late President Ibrahim Raisi was buried at a Shia shrine on Thursday. Ibrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash along with the foreign minister and six others.
Raisi was buried in a grave inside the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. The eighth Imam of the Shia community is buried in this shrine. A large number of people were present on this occasion and they were wearing black clothes. However, his funeral was not attended by as many people as the funeral of Revolutionary Guard General Qassim Soleimani after he was killed in a US drone attack in Baghdad in 2020.
A possible indication behind this could be the public sentiment regarding Raisi. The Raisi government had taken strict action during the protests over the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, which caused anger among the people. Amini was detained for allegedly not wearing the hijab, which is mandatory for Iranian women.
This action, as well as Iran's struggling economy, were not mentioned in state television and newspaper coverage. Moreover, Raisi's involvement in the mass murder of about 5,000 dissidents at the end of the Iran-Iraq war was never discussed.
