Amidst the ongoing geopolitical tension and economic confrontation in West Asia, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has sensationally accused the United States of systematically manipulating the global energy market. Abbas Araghchi alleged in his statement that US administration strategists are using mainstream media to create misleading and fabricated narratives regarding global energy supply. He said that news of fear, uncertainty and supply crisis is deliberately spread in the energy market so that the prices of crude oil can fluctuate in the international market. Through this well-planned propaganda, speculation is encouraged in the financial markets, resulting in billions of dollars of personal profits for energy companies and their associated lobbyists. Araghchi clarified that the advocates of American policies are busy serving their economic interests by showing false fear of war and sanctions.
Expanding the scope of his attack, the Iranian Foreign Minister also targeted pro-Israel lobbies and think tanks. He said Israel-linked groups are presenting ‘rosy and extremely optimistic assessments’ of war and military pressure against Iran to American policy makers. The aim of these groups is to convince America that a military siege on Iran and tough economic sanctions will bring quick success to Washington. Araghchi warned that this assessment is completely out of touch with ground realities and is unnecessarily prolonging a failed war just to benefit the military-industrial nexus.
Araghchi underlined that ordinary American citizens and consumers are bearing the heaviest brunt of Washington’s misleading policies and energy market manipulation. Due to artificial increase and uncertainty in oil prices in the international market, the rates of petrol, diesel, heating oil and electricity remain at high levels in the domestic markets of America. Rising fuel prices have increased transportation costs and food inflation across the country. According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, the real cost of policymakers’ personal profits and wrong geopolitical decisions is being borne by American taxpayers.
This diplomatic rhetoric has come at a time when naval and trade tensions are at their peak in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. He said that if the US wants a real solution, it will have to recognize Tehran’s legitimate rights, take concrete steps to restore mutual trust and stop undue interference in the energy market.
