A dangerous incident has occurred at a facility of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. A facility belonging to the IRGC in the Iranian city of Esfahan has reportedly suffered major damage due to a gas leak. According to an official statement from the IRGC, one person died and 10 were injured due to a gas leak in a workshop at the Sahib al-Zaman headquarters. The IRGC statement did not give more details, but the statement used the word 'martyr' for the person who died.
Initial reports used the hashtag #Israel
It is not yet clear whether this gas leak caused an explosion as social media users have not shared any photos of any explosion or smoke. However, what makes the incident even more suspicious is that the IRGC-affiliated Fars news agency used the hashtag #Israel in its initial report on the gas leak. The hashtag was later removed from the outlet's website, but it pointed to actions taken by Tehran's arch enemy.
Isfahan has been Israel's target before
This is not the first time that Israel has been suspected for an incident in Isfahan. On April 13, Israel attacked an Iranian airbase after Iran's drone and rocket attack. Iran claimed that the attack was thwarted by its air defenses. Some US sources said, at that time the missiles were fired by Israeli fighter jets from Iraqi airspace. Their target was the eighth Shekhari airbase, about 20 km northeast of Isfahan and 150 km south of the nuclear facility at Natanz.
Why is Isfahan special?
Isfahan is located in the center of Iran and is very important from the point of view of Iran's IRGC. Isfahan is home to several important military bases and the Shahid Aviation Industries Research Center. Where the Shahed-136 drone is built. It is also home to sites associated with Iran's nuclear program. This includes the underground Natanz breeding site, which has been repeatedly targeted by Israel.
