IPL 2024: Rohit did this after 12 years, 'Hitman' made many records

Despite a century by opener Rohit Sharma (105 not out), Mumbai Indians (MI) lost by 20 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 29th match of IPL 2024. At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Chennai scored 206/4 and then restricted Mumbai Indians to 186/6. Rohit remained unbeaten till the end, but could not lead his team to victory. Rohit hit 11 fours and five sixes in 63 balls. Rohit has scored both his centuries as a player in IPL.

This has happened for the first time in IPL

This is Rohit's first and second century so far as an opener in IPL. He scored a century in this most expensive cricket league of the world after 12 years. He became the first batsman to score more than one century for Mumbai in the IPL. This is the first time in IPL that Rohit has remained unbeaten and his team has failed to achieve the target. Before this match, Mumbai had won all 18 matches while chasing the score, in which Rohit remained unbeaten.

This is Rohit's eighth century in T20 cricket.

However, this is Rohit's first century in T20 cricket at Wankhede Stadium. Hitman completed his century by hitting a four off Pathirana in 19.3 overs. Despite scoring a century, he did not celebrate it because by then Mumbai team had lost the match. Only Virat Kohli (9) is ahead of him in terms of scoring centuries by an Indian batsman in T20. Overall, Rohit is the batsman with joint fourth highest number of T20 centuries.

Also made a record of hitting 500 sixes in T20 cricket.

Rohit also made a record of hitting 500 sixes in T20 cricket during his innings. He completed his half-century against Chennai with the help of 7 fours and 2 sixes in 30 balls. After completing his half-century, Rohit completed his 500 sixes in T20 cricket by hitting a brilliant six off Ravindra Jadeja in the 11th over. Rohit Sharma achieved this feat in 419 innings of 432 matches. He has now become the first batsman from India and Asia and the fifth in the world to hit the most number of sixes in T20 cricket. Chasing the target of 207 runs, Rohit and Ishan Kishan (23) gave a strong start to Mumbai by making a partnership of 70 runs for the first wicket. But in the eighth over, impact player Matisha Pathirana turned the match towards Chennai by dismissing Ishan and then Suryakumar Yadav (0) in the same over. After this, none of the Mumbai batsmen could perform and the team had to face defeat. Pathirana took four wickets for 28 runs in four overs. MS Dhoni came in the 20th over for Chennai and hit Hardik Pandya for three consecutive sixes. Dhoni scored 20 runs in four balls and these runs became the difference between victory and defeat between the two teams.
