PT Usha's statement on Vinesh Phogat: Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Dr. PT Usha has given a much talked about statement on Sunday. Vinesh, who was disqualified in 50 kg freestyle in Paris Olympics, was not named in the entire statement, but it seems that PT Usha has given special advice to Vinesh in gestures without naming her.

Former Olympian and current IOA chief Dr PT Usha has said that weight management is the responsibility of the athlete and coach, especially in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo. Managing the weight of athletes in these sports is the responsibility of each athlete and their coach, not the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinsha Pardiwala and his team.

The IOA had appointed a medical team a few months ago which will primarily help in managing the athletes during and after the event, including recovery and treatment in case of injury. This team was also formed to help those athletes who do not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists.

Dr. Pardiwala defends himself

Dr Usha said that the hatred towards the IOA medical team, especially Dr Pardiwala, is unacceptable. She hoped that the IOA will consider all aspects before arriving at any conclusion by blaming the medical team. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50kg weight category final for being 100 grams overweight.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will give its verdict on August 13 on whether Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified for the Paris Olympics, should be awarded the silver medal or not.
