
Today, on the special occasion of International Yoga Day, the whole world seems to be drenched in the unique energy of Yoga. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (June 21) led the country’s largest yoga program in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. This year International Yoga Day 2026 is being celebrated with a very special theme of ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’. Nearly 35,000 people practiced yoga together with PM Modi at the main event in Kolkata, while a record 10 lakh people participated in the mass celebration in sessions held at different locations across Kolkata.
PM Modi’s message from Bengal, the holy land of saints, remembers Swami Vivekananda
Addressing a historic gathering in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it is a very special and fortunate thing to be in the holy land of Bengal today on the occasion of Yoga Day. He said, “This is the holy land of Bengal where accomplished saints like Lord Ramakrishna Paramahamsa incarnated, from where Swami Vivekananda introduced the entire world to the Indian yoga tradition and culture. On this land, great yogis like Maharishi Aurobindo were born. Today, the experience of group yoga on such a great land is giving a different spiritual experience.”
The Prime Minister stressed that Yoga today is no longer just a part of our individual lifestyle, but has become an essential requirement for a better future of the entire world.
PM Modi praised Kolkata residents’ ‘Welcome with cleanliness’ initiative
During his address, PM Modi also openly praised a unique campaign being run in Kolkata along with Yoga. He said, “Today on Yoga Day, I appreciate the wonderful initiative of ‘Yoga of Cleanliness’ taken by the people of Kolkata. The way the citizens have continuously contributed their efforts and performed their duty for ‘Welcome Cleanliness’, it has become a great inspiration for the citizens of the entire country today.
21st June became the world’s biggest collective festival, the energy of Yoga spread from Himalayas to Saurashtra.
Referring to the longest day of the year, the Prime Minister said that June 21 is the longest day of the year in some parts of the earth, but because of International Yoga Day, it has now become the day of biggest collective celebration for the entire world. Today, many amazing and panoramic pictures of Yoga are emerging from every corner of the world.
He further said, “In India, from the Himalayas in the North to the Indian Ocean in the South, and from the Northeast and Bengal to Saurashtra in the West, today the entire country seems to be imbued with the divine energy of Yoga. The entire world today is feeling connected to each other through Yoga, and this is the real power of Yoga.” On this occasion, PM Modi extended warm wishes to the entire human community on International Yoga Day.
Yoga became a global movement due to UN resolution, organized in more than 210 countries
June 21 is celebrated as International Yoga Day since India’s proposal was unanimously accepted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014. Today it has become one of the largest public health initiatives in the world. This year too, International Yoga Day has been organized grandly by more than 210 Indian missions and embassies at more than 2,500 locations across the world, reflecting the growing strength of India’s ancient practice on the global stage.
