Thousands of workers demonstrated in Chicago
Indeed, in 1886 the struggle for workers' rights turned violent in many countries, including the United States. During the demonstration of thousands of workers in the city of Chicago, bombs were thrown at the police, in response to which the police also opened fire. Four laborers died and hundreds were injured.
It was decided to dedicate May 1 to the workers.
Subsequently, the Second International, an organization of labor and socialist parties around the world, chose May 1 for its Paris conference in 1889. It was decided to dedicate this day to the workers.
Laborers were employed from morning till evening
In fact, when the era of industrialization began in western countries, more workers started being made to work from sunrise to sunset. Everyone was being made to work for more than 15 hours. This continued to create dissatisfaction. Due to this, in October 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, an organization of trade unions of Canada and America, came forward.
Workers will not work more than 8 hours a day
It ordered that after May 1, 1886, workers would not work more than 8 hours a day. Finally that date also came i.e. 1 May 1886 and on that day lakhs of workers in different cities of America went on strike.
Chicago strike turns into violent clash
The American city of Chicago was at the center of this protest. The protest continued peacefully there for two days. The strike of thousands of employees, which started on May 1, suddenly turned violent on the evening of May 3. Some protesters attacked the police and threw bombs at them. Police also opened fire in response to the violence that broke out outside the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company.
four laborers lost their lives
In which four laborers lost their lives. Not only this, the next day also there was a violent clash between the police and the workers. A total of 12 people, including seven policemen, were killed. The strike of thousands of workers in Chicago, which started on May 1, suddenly turned violent on the evening of May 3.
Workers' movement continued in many countries
Nevertheless, between 1889 and 1890, workers continued to demonstrate in various countries regarding their demands. On May 1, 1890, three lakh workers took to the streets in Britain's Hyde Park. His demand was also that the workers should be made to work for 8 hours. Then with time this day became an opportunity to draw attention towards the rights of workers and the movement continued.
The Paris conference decided to dedicate May 1 to the workers
Then in the year 1889, the International Socialist Conference was organized in Paris and it was decided that May 1 should be dedicated to the workers. After this, gradually May 1 started being celebrated as Labor Day or Labor Day all over the world. It is the result of this movement that today a maximum of eight hours of work has been set for workers all over the world. Not only this, the introduction of one day holiday in a week is also the contribution of the Chicago Movement. Keeping this in mind, May 1 is celebrated as a national holiday in many countries of the world.
May Day was first celebrated in India in 1923.
Talking about the beginning of Labor Day in India, it was started in the year 1923 by the Labor Kisan Party of Hindustan in Madras (now Chennai). The red flag was first used in Madras on 1 May 1923 to symbolize the struggle and unity of the workers under the leadership of the Left and Socialist parties. This year, Labor Day started being celebrated on 1st May in India and here too in many states, 1st May is a public holiday.
