New Delhi, September 20 (HS). The Delhi High Court has given interim permission to the students of three minority colleges run by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee and affiliated to Delhi University to contest the Delhi University Students Union elections. Justice Purushendra Kaurav's bench has issued notice to Delhi University and the three colleges and sought their response. The next hearing of the case will be on September 23.
The petition has been filed by Rachit Rai and other students. The petition states that Delhi University issued a notification on September 2 announcing the elections of Delhi University Students Union for the session 2024-25, but the management committee of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Khalsa College, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College and Sri Guru Govind Singh College of Commerce decided to separate themselves from the elections of Delhi University Students Union. After the decision of the three colleges, the students studying in them could not participate in these elections.
During the hearing, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the three colleges said that according to the report of the Lingdoh Committee, the colleges have the privilege to participate in the student union elections or opt for nomination. He said that all the three colleges have opted for nomination in the Delhi University Student Union elections for this year. During the hearing, the lawyer appearing on behalf of the petitioner students said that all the three colleges were part of the Delhi University Student Union in the past, so this year they should not be allowed to stay away from the student union elections.
According to the petitioners, the last date for filing nomination for Delhi University Students Union 2024-25 was September 19. The last date for withdrawal of nomination is September 20. In such a situation, students wishing to contest the student union elections should be allowed to file nomination.
