State Panchayati Raj Minister Satpal Maharaj, citing the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the recommendation of “One Country-One Election” of the committee headed by the President, has directed the Chief Secretary to take action regarding the implementation of these arrangements in the Panchayat elections.
Minister Satpal Maharaj has instructed the Chief Secretary to explore the possibilities of implementing these arrangements in Panchayat elections as well as to take action on the basis of the progress made in other states. While giving written instructions to the Chief Secretary, he has said that some state governments have made such arrangements under the announcement of “one state-one election”.
Minister Satpal Maharaj said that in the state of Uttarakhand, except for Haridwar district, the three-tier panchayat elections for the remaining 12 districts are proposed to be held in 2024-25. During the tenure of the three-tier panchayat formed in the state in the year 2019, development work remained blocked for 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this period, even the meetings of the panchayats could not be held. In view of this, these two years of the pandemic cannot be linked with the 5-year tenure of the panchayat, therefore, respecting the sentiments of the public representatives and keeping all these points in mind, the three-tier panchayat elections should not be held in 2024-25, but should be held in the year 2027 along with Haridwar district.
The Panchayati Raj Minister has told the Chief Secretary that during the Covid period, the Jharkhand government had extended the tenure of panchayats for six months, while on the other hand Rajasthan has also announced “one state-one election”. Therefore, along with obtaining information from these states, it should be studied in depth and work should be done on whether any kind of arrangement can be made here in this direction.
