Ustad Zakir Hussain died on Monday at the age of 73. He was undergoing treatment for the last three weeks, and was admitted to the ICU after his condition did not improve. Initial reports suggested that he had heart-related problems. However, his family issued a statement stating that Zakir Hussain was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which became the main cause of his death.

What is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a serious lung disease that causes fibrosis (scarring) in the lung tissue. This results in the alveolar walls of the lungs becoming thickened, restricting the flow of oxygen. Gradually, the lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen decreases. There is no permanent cure for this disease, but through medicines, efforts are made to enhance the quality of life of the patient and increase the lifespan.
