New Delhi: Drought and heat have hit the common people doubly. In this summer season, the prices of vegetables are skyrocketing. Along with onions and potatoes, tomatoes are also getting expensive in many areas of the country. The price of tomatoes has doubled in the last two weeks.

Initially, the price of tomato was seen in Maharashtra and the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, but now its prices have increased across the country. It is being said that the price of tomato may increase further.

What is the price of tomatoes?

According to the government portal AgMarketNet, the average wholesale price of tomatoes in South India is Rs 35 to Rs 50 per kg. Along with this, the price of tomatoes has reached Rs 60 per kg in some markets of Karnataka.

According to the data, in the last two-three weeks, the price of tomatoes has doubled as compared to a year ago. However, the price of tomatoes in North India has not increased so much yet. However, it is believed that the situation may get complicated in July. Actually, whenever there is a shortage of supply, the prices increase.

Why are tomatoes becoming expensive?

According to experts, tomato production has not been much this year. Due to extreme heat, flowers and fruits got spoiled, which also reduced production.

Apart from this, it is believed that there is not much supply of tomatoes in the market. For the last one year, the prices of tomatoes have been skyrocketing between July and October.

In many areas, tomato is cultivated during the rainy season, but sometimes the crop gets spoiled due to heavy rains.

How expensive are potatoes and onions?

According to government data, potato prices have increased by 43.82 percent compared to last year. Along with this, onion prices have also increased by 55.05 percent. Last year, the government had banned the export of onion to control its prices, but onion export has started again in the current financial year.

The price of tomatoes has increased by about 37.29 percent. According to a Crisil report released a few days ago, onion prices have increased by 43 percent, tomato prices by 39 percent and potato prices by 41 percent.

Vegetable prices are rising due to extreme heat and less rainfall. Experts on rising inflation say that inflation rate will remain high due to heat. ICRA estimates that wholesale inflation rate may reach 3 percent in June 2024.
