Paris, August 2 (HS). Indian judo athlete Tulika Mann suffered a disappointing defeat in the women's +78 kg event at the Paris Olympics on Friday.

In the opening round at the Champ-de-Mars Arena, she was defeated by London Games champion Idalis Ortiz of Cuba by ippon with a score of 0–10.

In judo, an ippon is awarded when a judoka throws his opponent to the mat with significant force and speed. It can also be achieved by immobilizing the opponent with a grappling hold-down for 20 seconds or when the opposite judoka gives up.

Ortiz, who has an impressive Olympic record with two silver medals and a bronze in addition to the London 2012 gold, defeated the 25-year-old Indian in just 28 seconds. The experienced Cuban trapped Tulika in a chokehold, which led to the defeat.

The defeat of Tulika, who won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, brought an end to India's judo campaign at the Games, as she was the country's sole representative in the sport.
