Bangladesh violence: India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Bangladesh amid ongoing violence against Hindus and minority communities in Bangladesh. During this visit he held bilateral discussions on the security of Hindus and other issues before Bangladesh. Now after returning from Bangladesh, Vikram Misri told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs that Bangladesh has assured strict action against those accused of violence against Hindus and other minority communities.
Foreign Secretary responded to the committee
Speaking to the media after the committee, Tharoor said, ‘The Foreign Secretary has returned to India from Bangladesh. After returning from the trip, Misri gave full details of his discussions with Bangladeshi officials before the parliamentary committee. 21 to 22 MPs participated in the committee and asked questions on the situation in Bangladesh and the Foreign Secretary replied in detail.
The issue of security of Hindus was raised
According to sources, some MPs asked Misri about the asylum status of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India. However, it is not yet known what answer the Egyptian gave to the questions. It is noteworthy that Misri had raised the issue of ‘worrying incidents’ of atrocities on minorities in Bangladesh during his meeting with the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh on Monday (December 9).
Tension has increased between India and Bangladesh
Relations between the two countries have become further strained in recent weeks following attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh and the arrest of Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das. The issue of protesters forcibly entering the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Agartala, Tripura also affected the relations between the two countries. The neighboring country has seen incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities, as well as attacks on temples, in the past few weeks. India has expressed deep concern over these incidents.
