Due to the ongoing tension between Iran and Israel, the Indian government has increased its activism regarding the security of Indian tankers in this region.
1. Why is Hormuz important for India?
Lifeline of Energy: India imports most of its crude oil and LPG requirements from Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE). All this goods reaches Indian ports only through the Strait of Hormuz.

2. ‘Operation Sankalp’ of Indian Navy
Indian Navy has deployed its state-of-the-art warships and surveillance systems to secure the sea routes:
INS Shivalik: This guided-missile frigate is patrolling the region to protect Indian merchant ships.
INS Nanda Devi: Deployed for supply and logistics support, the ship is helping maintain the operational capability of the Indian Fleet.
Supervision: The entire maritime area is being monitored round the clock through P-8I reconnaissance aircraft and drones.
3. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s stance
S. Jaishankar has made it clear that India is in favor of peace in this region. He said, “Maritime security is our top priority. We are in touch with all concerned parties (including Iran) to ensure that international trade and energy supplies are not disrupted.”

Kharg Island: It is Iran’s main oil export terminal. Any kind of siege or attack around this could lead to a huge surge in global oil prices.
