Budapest, June 7 (HS). Indian freestyle wrestler Aman Sehrawat won the silver medal at the Polak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial 2024 wrestling tournament held in Budapest, Hungary on Thursday.
The 2023 Asian champion lost 11-1 to former world champion and Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan in the men's 57kg final at the Budapest Wrestling Ranking Series.
Higuchi was also a silver medallist at the World Championships last year. Sahrawat began with an 11-1 win over Georgia's Roberti Dingashvili in the quarter-finals. He defeated 2021 World Championships bronze medallist Aryan Tsutrin 14-4 to book his place in the final.
Sehrawat was the only male wrestler from India to take part in the tournament. Last month, the 20-year-old Indian wrestler secured the Paris 2024 Olympic quota for India through the World Olympic Wrestling Qualifiers in Istanbul, Turkey.
Women's wrestler Antim Panghal had secured India's first quota in wrestling for Paris 2024 from the World Championships last year. 2018 Asian Games gold medallists Vinesh Phogat (50kg) and Anshu Malik (57kg), will compete in the Budapest Ranking Series over the next two days. The ongoing tournament is the last wrestling ranking series before the Paris 2024 Olympics. Wrestlers will earn points in this meet, which will determine their ranking. The ranking will ultimately decide the seeding of wrestlers who have secured Olympic quota for the upcoming Summer Games.
