Indian Refugees Canadian Airports: This year in 2024, Indians seeking asylum at Canadian airports have broken all records and from January 2024 to June 2024, 16,800 Indians have sought asylum at Canadian airports. Of these, 30 percent are from Punjab alone. This figure is surprising because last year i.e. in 2023, 11,265 people had done this.
Whereas only 4100 Indians sought asylum in Canada in 2022 and only 1495 in 2021. This year, there has been a jump of up to 500 percent in the cases of Indians seeking asylum as compared to the first six months of last year. But Canadian officials are also surprised by the sudden increase in the number of Indians seeking asylum at Canadian airports, as in previous years this figure remained limited.
The Canadian government has not said anything to India in this regard yet. From April to June 2024, about 6000 Indians have sought asylum in Canada. After this, this trend continued in July-August as well and Indian people are continuously seeking asylum at airports. Due to the ongoing political relations between India and Canada, such a situation can give Canada a new issue to speak against India.
Most of the people seeking asylum in Canada cite threats to their lives and their families' lives in India, political pressure, religious pressure, etc. They enter Canada seeking asylum because they fear not being able to enter Canada on a valid visa.
They easily get the opportunity to apply for asylum at the airport itself. Those who have already got asylum are also telling their families about the easy way to settle in Canada through this route. This method is also being adopted due to student, spice visa and other changes.
