Indian recurve archery teams close to qualifying for Paris Olympics

New Delhi, June 21 (HS). Priyansh kept his chances alive of winning an individual medal in the compound division while the Indian men's and women's recurve teams remained in the race for an Olympic berth at the end of the third day of the Archery World Cup Stage-3 in Antalya, Turkey on Thursday.

Priyansh was the only Indian archer to reach the compound men's individual semi-finals.

Showing amazing consistency, Priyansh defeated Germany's Sebastian Hamdorf 149-141, Mexico's Juan Del Rio 149-149 (shoot-off: 10-9), compatriot Prathamesh Phuge 149-148 and Turkey's Batuhan Akcaoglu 149-147. He will face Denmark's Mathias Fullerton in the last-four.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Verma was defeated by Akcaoglu 148-146.

In the women's individual event, V. Jyothi Surekha lost to Italy's Elisa Roner 147-145 in the third round. Aditi Swami was defeated by Paola Ramirez Gonzalez 142-140, while Preneet Kaur lost to USA's Alexis Ruiz 146-144 in the second round.

In the recurve women's team event, the fifth-ranked Indian team of Deepika Kumari, Bhajan Kaur and Ankita Bhakat got a bye in the first round and defeated Netherlands 6-2 and Ukraine 5-3 but lost to France 5-4 (shoot-off 28-25) in the semi-finals.

Later, India lost 6-0 to Japan in the bronze medal match. However, reaching the semi-finals will help the Indian women secure a place at Paris 2024.

The sixth-seeded Indian men's team of B. Dheeraj, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav got a bye but lost 5-1 to the Netherlands in the next round.

The Indian men's and women's teams have a chance of qualifying for Paris 2024 through the world rankings of teams that have not yet qualified.
