New Delhi, March 16 (HS). The Indian Patent Office has granted more than one lakh patents in the last one year. The Patent Office granted more than one lakh patents between March 15, 2023 and March 14, 2024, thus about 250 patents were issued daily. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has given this information.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement issued on Saturday that the Patent Office has granted more than one lakh patents during the last one year. According to the ministry, about 250 patents were granted every working day. The ministry said that the Central Government has made several provisions in the Patent Rules, 2024 to simplify the process of obtaining a patent.

The ministry said that these results have come due to the government's measures to further strengthen the intellectual property rights ecosystem. During this period, there was a significant increase in Geographical Indication (GI) registrations, which was three times compared to the previous year. At present, 573 GIs are registered in India.

The Commerce Ministry informed that 98 new GIs were registered in the current financial year 2023-24 and 62 more are expected to be registered by March 31. Similarly, the figures of copyright and design registration so far in the current financial year are 36,378 and 27,819 respectively.

It is noteworthy that the Central Government has officially notified the Patent Rules, 2024. This is an important milestone towards promoting innovation and economic growth.
