Bangkok, May 21 (HS). India won the gold medal in the mixed 4x400m team event with a new national record at the inaugural Asian Relay Championships 2024 here on Monday.
The Indian relay team of Muhammad Ajmal, Jyotika Sri Dandi, Amoj Jacob and Subha Venkatesan won the gold medal with a timing of 3:14.12 and broke the previous national record of 3:14.34, held by Muhammad Ajmal, Vithya Ramraj, Rajesh Ramesh and Subha by winning a bronze medal in the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year. The Sri Lankan team won the silver medal with a timing of 3:17.00, while Vietnam won the bronze medal with a timing of 3:18.45.
Despite the record-breaking performance, the Indian team has still not secured a Paris 2024 Olympic quota in the mixed 4x400m event. After failing to clinch a direct quota from the World Relays in the Bahamas earlier this month, the Indian mixed 4x400m relay team will now have to rely on the Road to Paris rankings to make the cut for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
The Bangkok result will help India move up two places to 21st in the Road to Paris rankings, but only a top 16 finish will guarantee them a place in the Paris event. Italy, with a time of 3:13.56, is currently ranked 16th in the mixed 4x400m relay Road to Paris rankings. The qualification window for the Paris 2024 Olympic relay events ends on June 30.
The Indian men's and women's relay teams have qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics after finishing second in their respective heats at the World Relays in the Bahamas.
