Indian men’s hockey team loses 2-1 to Belgium

The Indian men's hockey team has suffered its first defeat in the Paris Olympics. India was defeated 2-1 by defending Olympic champion Belgium in its last Pool B match on Thursday. Thibaut Stockbroeks (33rd minute) and John-John Dohmen (44th minute) scored for Belgium. Abhishek scored the only goal for India in the 18th minute.

This is the first defeat of the Indian men's hockey team at the Paris Olympics. Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist India has won 2 of its last 3 matches in Paris. The team led by star drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh defeated New Zealand 3-2 and Ireland 2-0. Along with this, it played a 1-1 draw against Argentina.

In the match against Belgium, India was leading 1-0 till half time. India's star forward Abhishek gave India the lead by scoring a goal in the 18th minute of the first half. However, India failed to maintain its lead. In the third quarter, Belgium's Thibaut Stockbroeks (33′) and John-John Dohmen (44′) scored goals to give Belgium a 2-1 lead over India, causing the match to slip out of India's hands.

With this win, defending Olympic champions Belgium continued their winning streak in Paris. Before defeating India, they beat Ireland 2-0, won 2-1 over New Zealand and registered a thrilling 6-2 win against Tokyo 2020 silver medallists Australia.
