Paris, July 31 (HS). Indian boxer Preeti Pawar's hopes of bringing an Olympic medal for the country ended when Colombian boxer Yeni Marcela Arias Castaneda defeated her in the round of 16 of the women's 54kg weight category.

Once again, an Indian athlete came close to a medal but failed to qualify for the next round. Preeti's failed bid for a medal was due to her performance in the first round against Castaneda.

The Colombian boxer dominated Preeti, resulting in a close fight with four out of five judges giving Castaneda ten points. Preeti took the lead over Castaneda in the second round, with three of the judges scoring ten points in her favour after the second round. In the third and final round, it proved to be a close contest, but the Indian boxer lost. She lost the bout 2:3 by split decision in a hard-fought contest.

On Tuesday, India suffered defeats in boxing in both men's and women's categories. Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines defeated Indian boxer Jasmine Lamboria in the round of 32 match of the women's 57 kg weight category.

Like Preeti, the bout did not start well for Jasmine as she was trailing at the end of the first round. Four out of five judges gave the Philippines boxer ten points. In the second round, Petecio continued to dominate the Indian boxer. She looked comfortable in the second round and eventually all five judges gave her ten points. In the third and final round, Jasmine struggled to turn the entire bout in her favour and eventually lost the match by 0:5 points.

Amit Panghal also crashed out of the Paris Olympics after losing in the Round of 16 stage of the men's 51kg category. Amit lost 1-4 to Zambia's Patrick Chinyemba. In the initial rounds, Amit took a very aggressive stance and both boxers showered punches on each other. But in the third round, the judges ruled completely in favor of the Zambian boxer and he won by a split decision of 1-4.
