Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented the interim budget for the year 2024-25. In which the Finance Minister has also laid special emphasis on the defense sector.
In view of the threat from China and Pakistan, India is currently modernizing its army and this time the military budget has also been increased significantly. At present, the Indian Army is upgrading its weapons and for this India has signed a deal with Russia to buy the S-400 anti-missile system. The supply of this system has also started. Similarly, after Rafale fighter jets, India is also buying nuclear submarines from France. Along with this, India is also developing the indigenous light fighter jet Tejas. Huge funds are required for projects related to the modernization of the army. This time the Finance Minister has increased the defense budget by five percent.
This time the Defense Ministry has been given Rs 25,963.18 crore for civil expenditure. Rs 2,82,772.6 crore has been provided for defense services. In this budget, Rs 1,72,000 crore has been given for capital expenditure in the defense sector and Rs 1,41,205 crore for pension. In this way, the total defense budget has increased to Rs 6,21,940 crore. This amount is 28 thousand crore more than last time.
Allocation higher than previous budget
Earlier, in the full budget of 2023-24, the Modi government had increased the expenditure for the defense sector to Rs 5,93,537 crore. That allocation was 13.18 percent of the total expenditure of the government. In the last full budget, the allocation for the non-salary-operation related part was Rs 27,570 crore. Thus the total allocation in this sector has increased to Rs 90 thousand crore.
BRO's budget can be increased further
The government's focus is on strengthening the infrastructure in the areas bordering China. Due to this, the budget of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was increased by 43 percent in the last budget. Along with this, the budget of DRDO was also increased by nine percent. This time too, DRDO is likely to get more money. Because DRDO plays an important role in the development of indigenous weapons.
