Paris, July 31 (HS). The series of upsets continued for India in archery at the Paris Olympics, when young archer Dheeraj Bommadevara had to face defeat in the men's individual 1/16 event.
Canada's Eric Peters and Dheeraj played out a thrilling draw that kept fans on the edge of their seats. It was raining 10s from both archers' bows, leading to a very thrilling contest between the two archers. Dheeraj came close, but fell too far in the end, sealing his exit from the event.
The first set started with Dheeraj's 10 points which proved to be the difference between the two archers. Dheeraj took the lead but Peters relied on his accuracy to come back and level the match. The third set started with Peters hitting three 9s while Dheeraj hit two 10s to win the third set. In the fourth set, both archers scored 10 points on every shot and won one point each. Dheeraj was one step away from securing his place in the next round but Peters scored 9 points in his last shot to push the game into a shoot-off.
Both archers scored 10 points each but Peters' arrow was closer to the centre, taking him to the next round and ending Dheeraj's campaign in the individual event.
Meanwhile, in the women's event, India's top archer Bhajan Kaur entered the Round of 16 after defeating Poland's veteran Violeta Mijsor in the women's individual recurve archery.
It was a clean sweep for Bhajan as he knocked out Mijsor with a 6-0 win in the Round of 32. He scored 29 points in the opening set, scoring 10, 9, 9.
In response, the Polish archer faltered in her first shot and scored 8 points. She scored two consecutive nines and could only manage 26 points in the first set.
In the second set, Bhajan scored 10 consecutive points in her first two shots to snatch the second set from Maizsor's grasp and take a 4-0 lead. In the third set, Maizsor scored five points in her final shot, knocking her out of the contest.
