The Indian cricket team is fighting a ‘do or die’ battle in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. Will this series decide whether Team India will play the final of the World Test Championship next year or not? Such equations are being formed that if India defeats Australia 4-1 in the series, then it will enter the title race without any challenge. But what will happen if Team India loses this series? Will Rohit and company be able to make it to the final of the World Test Championship even after losing the series?
Team India’s equation for WTC
If the Indian team beats Australia 4-1 or 3-1 in the 5-Test series, then it will qualify without any problem. If Team India wins 3-2 then it is expected that the one match series between Australia and Sri Lanka will end in a draw. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is tied at 2-2 and the Indian team can reach the final only if Sri Lanka beats the Kangaroos 2-0 in the next Test series.
What if India loses the series?
Another surprising equation is that even if Team India loses the series 3-2 against Australia, it can still be in the race for the title. After losing the series 3-2, Rohit and Co. can play in the final only if Pakistan beats South Africa 2-0 in the next Test series and at least one match between Australia-Sri Lanka ends in a draw.
WTC points table
If we look at the points table of the World Test Championship, South Africa is currently on top with a percentage of 63.33 points. Australia is in second place, whose percentage currently stands at 60.71. Whereas the marks percentage of India, which is in third place, is 57.29. Sri Lanka, placed fourth in the table, has almost lost its hopes of reaching the finals after its 2-0 Test series defeat at the hands of South Africa.
