India is adjacent to Myanmar for 1610 kilometers. It plans to build a long border fence at a cost of $3.7 billion (about Rs 370 crore). This planning is being done to deal with illegal activities including smuggling. The central government had announced earlier this year that it would end the decades-old policy of visa-free movement by fencing the border to preserve the democratic infrastructure of the Northeast as well as maintain national security. A committee of the government has approved the cost of construction of the fence. Now efforts will be made to get approval from the Cabinet Committee headed by the Prime Minister. A source gave this information on the condition of anonymity. The Prime Minister's Office, Home Ministry, Finance, External Affairs Ministry and Information and Broadcasting Ministry have not yet commented on the issue. Thousands of civilians and hundreds of soldiers have fled to the Indian border following the military coup in Myanmar in 2021.
