United Nations Security Council: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia believes that India, Brazil and African countries should get permanent representation in the United Nations Security Council. “India, Brazil as well as African countries should have got permanent representation in the Security Council long ago. A large population of the world lives in these countries, whose representation needs to be decided.

India has been at the forefront of efforts for various reforms over the past several years, including increasing the number of permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council. India says the 15-nation Security Council, established in 1945, is not fit for purpose in the 21st century and does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.

India says that it is also entitled to become a permanent member of the Security Council. Last month, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron supported India's bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council or UNSC.

India became a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 2021-22. There is a growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.
