New Delhi: India has significantly narrowed the gap with China in 4G to 5G smartphone shipments over the last 12 months and is closing in on it. The share of 5G phones in India’s total smartphone shipments has increased from 57 percent in the second quarter of the last financial year to 83.4 percent in the second quarter of the current financial year. During this period, China’s 5G phone shipment increased from 89.5 percent to 95.6 percent.

During this period, China did not register any significant growth on a quarterly basis. Unlike India, China’s share in 5G phones declined from 93.2 percent in Q3FY24 to 89.8 percent in Q4.

In India, 5G phones accounted for 77 percent of all smartphone shipments in Q1FY25, which means an increase of more than 7 percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. 5 Smartphone shipments in the second quarter of the current financial year reached 3.84 crore, the highest in any quarter.

This represents an increase of 43 percent compared to a quarter ago and 53 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

It is estimated that there are already 25 crore 5G smartphones in the country. India’s smartphone base, which was 60 crore in FY 2024, is expected to grow to 695 crore by FY 2025 and 915 crore by FY 2026-27, capturing a larger share of the market. Meanwhile, there is a possibility of further decline in the number of 2G customers.

In contrast, sales of lower-end smartphones and 4G feature phones have also declined. At the same time, there has also been a decline in 4G shipments, which have come down from 79 lakh in the first quarter of the current financial year to 77 lakh in the second quarter.
